60 years of environmental commitment
ACTING
ACTING ON WASTE MANAGEMENT:
A HISTORIC COMMITMENT FOR CHIMIREC
Today we operate in most industrial
sectors that generate Hazardous and
Non-Hazardous Waste. CHIMIREC began
its activities in 1958 with the collection
of used black oils from garages. At the
time, the law on waste did not exist and
the preservation of the environment was
not on the agenda. Historically a specialist in the automotive sector,
CHIMIREC takes care of all hazardous waste from car
repair workshops, by collecting and treating:
R 86,000 tonnes/year of used black oils.
Recovery rate: 87%
R 6,500 tonnes/year of oil filters.
Recovery rate: 100%
Right from the start of its activities, CHIMIREC avoided R 5,600 tonnes/year of used coolants. Recovery rate:
polluting the environment by collecting used oil, know- 99.5%
ing that a single litre discharged into nature can cover
a surface area of 1,000 m2, prevents oxygenation of the In addition to its services, CHIMIREC collects 50,000
water, and has harmful impacts on fauna and flora for tonnes/year of non-hazardous waste (windshields,
several years. bumpers, cardboard, scrap metal and aluminium, etc.).
Recovery rate: 82%
Driven by the strong conviction of its Chairman Jean
Fixot since 1987, the Group quickly adopted a sustaina-
ble development approach by seeking operating solu-
tions for these tonnes of sorted and collected waste.
The first recovery methods, alternatives to landfills and
incinerators, were set up as early as 1985.
